Here we will discuss some steps and tips on how to achieve great results when painting with acrylic on glass.

Want to create your own original piece for your home, to decorate a holiday or wedding table? Or just create a gift for someone you love? You can even make a hand-painted glass candle holder from a jar.

What we'll need:

  • Glass container (glass jar, candle holder or even a jar)
  • Clear water and alcohol or acetone for degreasing
  • Acrylic paints, brushes and Artmagico markers
  • Oven for baking
  • Acrylic paints can be used on a variety of surfaces including glass. However, glass is non-absorbent - non-porous and the paint has no way to adhere, which must be taken into account. On a non-porous surface, acrylic paint is harder to adhere to and can easily cause mechanical damage to the paint and the surface needs to be fixed.

Surface preparation or how to start?

Before you start painting, it is important to prepare the surface of the glass. Preferably use frosted glass to make the paint adhere better, but this is not a requirement. Wash the glass well with warm water and spring and then dry it thoroughly. You can also use a little alcohol or acetone to remove any residual grease.

Choose the motif you want to paint - it's entirely up to you what motif you choose, from a few simple flowers, stars or even an inscription, it's up to you. We have chosen simple flowers as our motif.

We paint the petals of the flowers, just put the tip of the brush with acrylic paint on the surface and pull towards the centre, this will create the shape of the petals that make up the flower. Leave to dry properly.

Now we can use an acrylic paint brush or paintbrush to create the centre of the flower.

Once the surface is dry, darken the edges of the centre of the flower.

Finally, use acrylic markers to make small details - dark dots.

There are many different techniques you can try when painting on glass with acrylic paints and markers. Here are some basic techniques:

  • Layering and shading: create different shades and effects by applying multiple layers. This creates an interesting depth impression.
  • Contouring and creating detail: use acrylic markers to create lines and outlines that define your motifs on the glass. You can combine different tip types, use a medium acrylic marker tip for larger areas, and use metallic markers for beautiful coverage.
  • Stencils: if you are not confident in your painting skills, you can use stencils.
If you find that the colours don't cover the glass as well as you would like? For maximum coverage, you can apply in two coats, allowing the first coat to dry sufficiently.

When you're done, let the image dry for a couple of hours and then fix the image afterwards. Place it in a cold oven. Then set this to 160 degrees and bake for about 1 hour. Then turn the oven off and let it cool.

After baking the picture becomes waterproof, you can wash it by hand in water, but be careful, the picture is not abrasion resistant. Never wash in the dishwasher. The paint should not come into contact with food. Make sure the glass is clean and don't use harsh sponges or cleaners that could damage your picture.
